Should I force my daughters to say more in English or Malay? I have to ask few things in my mind before i could actually answer this question..How often is my kids exposed to each of their languages? What need do they have to communicate in each language? In which language did they speak their first words? I think the kids have the greatest advantage of learning and using two languages, based on trial and error. They are actually able to answer me in English from time to time, which leads me to believe that they do have a certain control of English.However, I also need to remember is that English is their minority language, so they probably feel more comfortable speaking in Malay.Most children at their age are in the midst of the process of EXPRESSING their language. Until now it was more important for them to develop their ability to understand and analyze adult speech in order for them to begin to express their own ideas and needs in words.
